We'd like to introduce you to the artists who competed to be Chalk Urban Art Festival's Champion Artist in 2011.

This year our theme was Food. Look what our artists served up!

Jenny McCracken – Thornbury, VIC

Champion Pavement Artist 2011

Jenny retains the title of Champion Pavement Artist from 2010. In 2010 she also won the People's Choice Award'.

Jenny has produced chalk artwork all over the world; she's also a portrait painter and has been a finalist for the prestigious 'Doug Moran Prize' in Victoria.

Jenny has been Head Scenic Artist on many Theatre Productions in Australia, including the world famous 'Walking With Dinosaurs'.

Clark Ashley Smith – Porcupine Ridge, VIC

Best 3D artwork 2011

Clark is like a full bodied red, he has a unique taste, gets better with age and loves loves to incorporate an interactive and illusionary side to his chalk art. Come down to meet him, say hi and he'll put you in the picture - literally!

Adam Celeban - Waitara, NSW

Best 2D artwork 2011

This will be Adam’s 5th consecutive year competing in Chalk Urban Art Festival.

Adam traditionally works in digital media, his work in animation shows through the works he produces in chalk pastel.


'The Cropping of Capricorn'

Jason Howe - Caringbah, NSW

Artists’ Choice 2011

Jason Howe is a Sydney based artist that has been practicing the fine art of painting for 20 years.

He has been exhibiting in artist run galleries and cafes in Sydney, Wollongong and Melboune for the last 10 years.

Being influenced by cartoons, animation, music, astronomy and the graffiti art characters of Kenny Scharf & Vaughn Bode, Jason describes his work as post-pop hip-hop doodlist surrealism.


'Our Lady of Perpetual Reflux'

Zan Von Zed – Baulkham Hills, NSW

People's Choice & Western Sydney Artist Prize

Zan is an emerging Sydney artist who works predominantly in oils and acrylics. Her influences include; history, culture, sci-fi and lowbrow.

She works as an illustrator, and has had her art and sculptures featured in exhibitions around Sydney.

Arto Heino, Mt Pritchard, NSW

ISS Security Guards' Choice 2011

Arto has been an Artist for about 36 years and is a member of Liverpool Art Society.

This is his third time at Chalk Urban Art Festival. He arrived a novice and now makes his own chalk!

In addition to producing art, Arto started an underground science fiction and comic fanzines, has worked as a freelance artist, author and computer programmer and is a keen musician & guitar player.


'Symphony of Favourites'

Amelia Batchelor, Murwillumbah NSW

Best newcomer 2011

Amelia's interests are in music inspired expression, shapes and color of light, bazar collections, patterns and textures in nature, and the revival of old or unusual things. She is a multi-platform artist with skills based in the mediums of paint, paper, recycling and nature based sculpture, photography and community art projects.

Ala Paredes - Chippendale, NSW

Best Novice 2010

Ala is a freelance designer & illustrator and recent graduate of from the Sydney Design Institute 2009

She’s been an official Courtroom Sketch Artist, designed books and produced illustrations and sculptures for exhibitions.


'You're Invited'

Amy Yongsiri, Parramatta NSW

Amy teaches high school students (drawing/ illustration, digital arts) and is also a freelance artist.

This is her 3rd consecutive year competing in the festival. Amy visited Chalk Urban Art Festival when it was held in Darling Harbour and was encouraged to enter when the venue changed to her home town of Parramatta.


'The Girl from the Kebab Shop'

Andrew Clarke – Heathpool, SA

Recipient Travelling Artist Grant 2011

Andrew Clarke is a South Australian artist practising in a variety of media including oil, watercolour, charcoal and chinese ink.

Drawing influence and inspiration from both the western and eastern classical artistic traditions Andrew's work draws upon a process of development from development from direct observation to imagined composition with an emphasis upon linear & tonal design.


'Mezza Italiana'

Anton Pulvirenti, Ryde NSW

Anton returns in 2011. In 2010 he was Highly Commended for his artwork. In 2007 he won the title of Champion Pavement Artist at Chalk The Walk in 2007.

Anton has paintings in private collections throughout South Korea, Italy and Australia. Since winning in 2007 Anton has been commissioned to headline at Festivals in Australia and Overseas. In 2010 he was guest artist at the Qatar Marine Festival in Doha.


'Food'

Brendon Ussher, Wallsend, NSW

Brendon is an airbrush, chalk and body artist from the industrial city of Newcastle in NSW.  He has a colourful history in graffiti which saw him sent to jail, followed by the media and featured on Today Tonight.  

Brendon now uses his artistic skills to paint murals on cars, bikes, shops and is even a professional bodypainter. Brendon has received numerous awards for his work including Highly Commended at Chalk the Walk 2008 and 3rd prize in Special FX at the Melbourne Body Art Competition 2011.


'Spotted Hunter'

Bruce Doran, Wamboin, NSW

Bruce started drawing wildlife as a child while living in Africa. In his teenage years he sold his drawings in Nairobi, Kenya. Most of Bruce's artwork is an attempt to realistically depict wildlife; however Bruce also enjoys cartooning and finds that 'doodling' in meetings helps with his work.

In addition to being an artist Bruce is lecturer in Geographic Information Systems Fenner School of Environment and Society at the ANU College of Medicine, Biology & Environment in Canberra.


'Half a Man-Sheen lost his Shine'

Cherie Vize – Dolans Bay, NSW

Cherie is an emerging artist from Sydney, she is a Fine Art Tutor who specialises in oil, acrylics, graphite, watercolour, mixed media, colour pencil and pen & ink.

Commencing September 7, Cherie is participating in her first group exhibition at Monstrosity Gallery alongside other emerging artist's and established artists.


'The Illogicality of the Destruction of Me through the Abuse of Addiction of Essential Nutrients'

Chrissy Chamberlain – North Rocks, NSW

Mum of three, Chrissy first got into art four years ago as a way to help her son who has a vision disorder. She was advised to stimulate his vision with bright toys and pictures, so she started to paint pictures for him.

Chrissy's gains inspiration from rural areas and is huge fan of Australia artist Reg Mombassa. Her own work tends to be quirky, bubbly and very colourful and is strongly influenced by her children.


'Today's Menu'

Christine Gallagher – Cairns, QLD

Christine has been a signwriter for 20 years and specialise in hand drawn artwork, over a range of mediums. Chalk Art Menu Boards are the majority of her business, she also produces hand painted enamel signage and acrylic artworks. Christine has just completed airbrushing a motorcycle and teach calligraphy and chinese brush painting in Cairns Far North Queensland.


'Nature's Supermarket'

Clare Walton, Northcote, VIC

Travelling Artist Grant recipient 2011

Clare primarily works on community art projects, she works with children at schools, festivals and in the community. Her focus is on recycled materials with an emphasis on community & environment.

Her personal work is a mixed of collage, painting and drawing taking inspiration from early Japanese prints to art deco and Klimt.


'Ice Cream Dream'

Danielle Palmer – Newtown, NSW

Danielle has exhibited her work throughout Australia and the U.S. She has won numerous awards for her work and produced many private commissions. She is known for producing surreal / fantastical images.

Originally from Newcastle, Danielle now lives in Sydney, in addition to producing and exhibiting her own art, Danielle teaches art at Tempe High School.


'Diabetic Addiction'

Dom Intelisano – Oxenford, QLD

Recipient Travelling Artist Grant 2011

Dom lives by the brush! He is a vibrant & eccentric character with a serious sense of fun. Dom has over 20 years’ experience as an illustrator, animator, designer and artist for festivals, theme parks and events and is an active member of the arts network in QLD’s Gold Coast region.

Dom impressed the judges in 2009 and was Highly Commended for his chalk art. He’s always willing and able to share skills and assist other artists; you’ll often find him entertaining the public at Chalk Urban Art Festival.


'Raaaaark!'

Garry Donnellan – Killarney Heights, NSW

Garry won the inaugural competition held on Pyrmont Bridge in Darling Harbour in 2005. Since then Garry has been travelling around Europe & Australia, using pavement art to attract commissioned works and fund his travels.


'There's Always Someone Bigger'

Jonathan Verzosa - St Johns Parks, NSW

Jonathan is currently working as an interior design assistant and studying graphic design at Enmore Tafe.

This is his third appearance at Chalk Urban Art Festival.


'Sushi Bag'

Julie Doye – Katoomba, NSW

Julie Doye’s art is heavily influenced by street art, popular culture and modern art history. Of late she has held numerous solo exhibitions of her painted works on canvas and her illustrations in both Sydney and Melbourne. 

Her recent achievements include highly commended at the 2008 Chalk Urban Art Festival, Winner of the Drum Media cover design competition in January 2009 and her installation work for the band Dappled Cities was featured on JJJTV.


'Spaghetti Heaven'

Leeanne Ricci – Bondi Beach, NSW

Guided by the personal philosophy that creativity is not limited to the canvas, Leeanne enjoys designing and creating in a variety of mediums including digital art, furniture and jewellery design.

In recent years, travel has inspired Leeanne to develop that incorporate vivid colours and dynamic lines.


'Vanity'

Luciano Valeo – Wollongong, NSW

Currently my focus is centred around ‘Special Education’ through the Visual Arts. The students I work with are “identified youth at risk”. Painting, Drawing and Printmaking including (mono prints, relief, etchings, collagraphs, chine colle) has provided me with a flexible, alternative approach to education. A project based approach has provided students with an opportunity to develop skill and to express themselves and make connections with their world in a positive and creative manner.

My own artwork is directly influenced by nature and spontaneous experiences. It has subsequently taken on an organic growth in its development. Interests in both the natural environment & martial arts, arts has allowed me to explore a spiritual and cultural approach to my art practice.

Luke Marcatili - Darlinghurst, NSW

Luke Marcatili is an emerging Sydney artist whose work is influenced by art history, popular culture and his environment.

Having graduated from the National Art School in 2007, Luke’s work takes familiar motifs and twists them to explore personal meaning.


'Right on Target'

Maree Gordon Cooke - Cairns, QLD

Maree works with her sister producing Chalk Art Menu Boards and artworks. It's a niche market, she is constantly asked if she can do chalk pavement artwork. This is a different medium, Maree hasn't yet tried and tested it out yet is looking forward to learning new skills at Chalk Urban Art Festival.

Maree also exhibits and sells her private artworks at various galleries in Cairns and has also sold her work overseas.


'Journey of Food'

Rudy Kistler – Paddington, NSW

Rudy has been creating anamorphic chalk drawings and street art for over six years and is starting to get some serious recognition.  "Every piece I do is original and one-off and I never know what it's really going to look like until I finish."  The scale of Rudy's artworks ranges from huge to quite small, each piece is highly interactive, full of colour, and thought-provoking.


'Food for Thoughts'

Stuart O'Hara – Quakers Hill, NSW

Stuart devotes much of his energy these days to exploring and expanding his knowledge of 3D computer graphics, combining his graphic design with computer generated art. His first love however, was sketching and working with pastels. Stuart is packing away the PC and pulling out the pastels for “Chalk Urban Art Festival”, to rekindle a long lost love.


'The Mushrooms Hallucinated about Fruit'

West – Woolloomooloo, NSW

West is an Australian female visual artist working in T-shirt design, screenprinting, abstract fur paintings and commission portraits. She draws her inspiration from feminism, pop culture, mischief and people watching.


'My Food'

Zachary Craig – Stanmore, NSW

Is currently studying Advanced Diploma of Product Design – Design Centre Enmore and Traditional Oil Painting at the Charlie Sheard Studio School.
